#1. Decorate the entire cover of one Composition Notebook- This will be your Journal. *Make sure your name and the word “Journal” are visible on the front. Extra- Credit- Decorate the entire cover with words and pictures that say something about you as a reader. BE CREATIVE! 7th Grade Cover: Light Blue Background 8th Grade Cover: Red Background

#2. Actively read one Fiction and one Nonfiction book. Active reading includes annotating while reading. Write your thoughts, questions, and/or opinions in the book or on Post-It Notes. Only use a Yellow highlighter for Golden Lines. Golden Lines are words, phrases, and sentences that are very descriptive. Only the Best of the Best words, phrases, and sentences should be highlighted in yellow.
7th Grade and 8th Grade #3. Write 5 Journal entries about the Fiction book.
7th Grade and 8th Grade #4. Write 5 Journal Entries about the Nonfiction book.
Journal Entries: Need to be at least a full page long! Need to be written (cursive or print) neatly ! Typing is fine- just cut out typed entry and staple it into your journal. Spelling counts! Title of the book needs to be written at the top of each entry. Possible Journal Topics: Any connection to the book and yourself, family or friends ? Any connection between the book and the world? Why did you choose these titles? Compare your book to another book. Would you make any changes- why or why not? Favorite/Least favorite characters- why? Did you learn anything new? What? Rate the book and explain your rating system and why your book received your rating. Golden lines and why did you choose these lines Compare/Contrast the book and the movie. Who would you recommend this book to and why?
Extra-Credit: Choose a fiction book and a nonfiction book about the same topic. Show how these 2 books are related in your journal entries.
7th Grade: Choose one: Book Trailer or Book Poster 7th Grade ONLY- Create a Book Trailer about one of the books you read this summer- A book Trailer is just like a Movie Trailer, but it promotes a book rather than a movie. It is important to get the reader excited about and interested in your book. Book Trailer- 5 minutes or less OR 7th Grade ONLY- Create a Book Poster promoting one of the books you read this summer. Illustrate an important event or an interesting fact from the book. Look at movie posters for ideas on the correct layout. (You may use the computer for lettering or images) Paper size- 12 by 12 (Scrapbook Paper- sold at Michael's)
8th Grade Only- Choose one Interactive project - NO Movie Trailer Projects for 8th Grade- only for 7th
8th Grade- Choice # 1:
Fiction Book Interactive Poster Project- on 12 by 12 card stock type paper- (Scrapbook paper-sold at Michael's) Design and Construct an Interactive Book Poster-an interactive poster is a poster that encourages interaction- Flaps that open, slots where paper can be pulled out, scrolls that come off the poster, velcro items that can be taken off and on , envelopes that can be opened with information inside, paper circles that spin, etc.. Fiction PosterMust Include:
5 Literary Elements of your Fiction Book Literary Elements: A. Characters- Share and Describe the Protagonist, Antagonist - Appearance, Personality, Interests, Way of Speaking, What others think of these characters, How do these characters treat others Are these characters- Dynamic (changes over time) or Static (No changes over time) B. Plot Structure - show in words and pictures the plot of your fiction book Include the following words: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution C. Conflict- struggle between 2 opposing forces- Describe using lines from the novel D. Theme- Message of the novel- Describe with words and/or pictures E. Setting- Time and Place- Describe with words and pictures- Is this place important to this story? How?
8th Grade- Choice #2-
Complete an interactive Poster about your nonfiction book choice. 12 by 12 paper- sold at Michael's
Poster must include: A. Details about the people in your nonfiction book- describe the main people, background information, etc. B. What did you learn from reading this nonfiction book. C. Interesting facts and why these facts are interesting to you. D. Any questions you have for the author. E. Anything you would have done differently than the real people in your book. F. Did you go any further after reading he book? Do you do more research? Did you read other books or articles about the topic of your nonfiction book- if yes, why? If no, why not? G. Images (computer generated or original art work) of important people, events, or things with captions.
Extra-Credit: Choose a fiction book and a nonfiction book about the same topic. Show how these 2 books are related in your journal entries.
